Basements are the one room in a Central Ohio home where the wrong flooring choice shows up fast - humidity, occasional dampness, and concrete slabs all play by different rules than the rest of the house. Here's how luxury vinyl plank, carpet, and laminate actually compare below grade.
Luxury Vinyl Plank: the default recommendation
Rigid-core LVP is 100% waterproof and installs directly over a concrete slab with a thin vapor-barrier underlayment - no glue-down mess, no worrying about ground moisture wicking up through the floor. For finished basements used as a family room, home gym, or in-law suite, it's what we recommend most often in Grove City, Hilliard, and Galloway homes alike.
Carpet: warmth, with the right precautions
Carpet feels great underfoot in a basement rec room, but it needs the right setup below grade: a moisture-resistant pad, and ideally a slab that's tested dry before installation. We won't install carpet directly on a slab we haven't checked - it's a callback waiting to happen otherwise.
Laminate: the one to skip below grade
Laminate's core is wood-based, and even "water-resistant" laminate can swell if a basement ever takes on moisture - which is common enough in older Central Ohio foundations that we generally steer basement projects toward laminate flooring only on the main or upper floors, not below grade.
What It Costs
| Flooring Type | Installed $/sq ft | Basement Fit |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury Vinyl Plank | $5 - $9 | Excellent - fully waterproof |
| Carpet + moisture pad | $3 - $8 | Good, with a dry slab |
| Laminate | $4 - $7 | Better upstairs than below grade |
