Engineered hardwood done right

Engineered hardwood pairs a real wood surface with a dimensionally stable plywood core underneath. It looks and feels like [solid hardwood](/real-solid-hardwood-flooring) underfoot, but it won't cup, gap, or buckle when humidity swings - which makes it the natural fit for the newer, slab-on-grade subdivisions common around the Greater Columbus Area, plus basements, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heat.

Burke Flooring stocks engineered hardwood from Lauzon, Mirage, Mercier, Kahrs, Coswick, Shaw, and Armstrong - the same lines designers spec on high-end builds.

Why homeowners choose engineered

Engineered hardwood delivers most of what people love about solid wood, minus the sensitivity to Central Ohio's swing from humid summers to dry winter heat.

  • Stable on concrete slabs and over radiant heat
  • Available in wider planks (up to 9") than solid wood typically offers
  • Factory pre-finished with tough aluminum-oxide topcoats
  • Floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation, matched to your subfloor
  • Refinishable once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness

Species, widths, and finishes

Most engineered hardwood starts with European or American oak, though maple, walnut, hickory, and exotic species are all available. Plank widths run from a classic 3" up to designer 9"-wide boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained European looks.

Professional installation

Our installers assess the subfloor before recommending anything - moisture testing on concrete, joist inspection on plywood, flatness checks throughout. From there we recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will actually perform best in your home. Every quote includes baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor, backed by our one-year installation guarantee. Want it upstairs too? Pair it with [hardwood stairs](/hardwood-stairs) for a seamless look, or start with a [free estimate](/free-estimate).

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions

Yes - if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) should be screened and recoated instead of fully sanded.

Water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or burst pipe still needs to be cleaned up promptly.

Yes - this is one of its biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to keep the floor from gapping.

Floating installs faster and is easier to repair later. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and runs quieter. Over concrete we usually recommend glue-down; over plywood, either method works well.
